Jimoh Lateef Babatunde, a FUPRE Computer Science student, was months away from graduation but he was shot dead by unknown gunmen
A final year Computer Science student at the
Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun, (FUPRE), was shot
dead by gunmen on Friday.
The deceased, Jimoh Lateef Babatunde, was killed in what seems like a robbery attack near the FUPRE Boys Hostel at about 8pm according to Akpomedaye Philip who was quoted by Vanguard.
”It
is another case of robbery. Babatunde should have been graduating in
the next four months. We were together discussing sports when he excused
us to fetch some items outside"
"Barely 30
minutes later, he was lying in a pool of his blood, his neck shattered
by one of the two gunshots we heard not far from the hostel," Philip was
quoted as saying.
Student Pulse gathered that
Babatunde's killing sparked students' protest in the institution,
effectively grounding all academic activities.
Philip,
who is the Governor of the hostel where the shooting occurred, added
that the attack which culminated to Babatunde's killing is not an
isolated case.
”We have been under ceaseless attacks and molestation from criminals within Ugbomro community.
"The other day it was another male student who survived a shot to the head," he said.
He
blamed the institution's security apparatus, especially the "the CSO
who has failed to secure the lives of students is passing blame,
accusing harmless Babatunde of being a cultist."
The Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, DSP Celestina Kalu (Mrs.) confirmed Babatunde's dead.
The corpse was reportedly taken to Warri Central Hospital morgue after the police were called in.
