Usain Bolt ran sub-10 seconds over 100 metres for the first time in 2014
on Saturday, clocking 9.98 at an indoor event in Warsaw.
The six-time Olympic gold medallist, who has struggled with
hamstring issues this year, broke the 100m indoor record - an event that
is rarely run and does not form part of the World Indoor Athletics
Championships.
Warsaw's national football stadium had its roof closed for the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, which was organised to honour the former Polish hammer-thrower and Olympic champion, who died suddenly of a pulmonary embolism at a training camp in Portugal in 2009 at the age of 26.
Bolt has yet to run sub-10secs in an outdoor event this year but made a significant statement ahead of Zurich's Diamond League meeting next week, overcoming a fairly weak field to win.
The 28-year-old Jamaican broke Frankie Fredericks' previous 100m indoor mark from 1996.
Bolt won by 0.35secs from compatriot Sheldon Mitchell, while Trell Kimmons of the United States stopped the clock at 10.34secs.
